The Black Pages

The Black Pages began as a challenge in restraint: to discover how much atmosphere, character, dread, and emotional weight could be contained within only a handful of pages.

Rather than sprawling novels, novellas, or traditional short stories, the series is built around brief descents into fully realised worlds, dark, concentrated experiences that open quickly, leave their mark, and close before they can explain themselves away.

This became the foundation of The Black Pages: a series of compact flash-fiction short story collections, each centred on a distinct genre, but united by horror, tension, and shadow.

Flash fiction short stories are deceptively demanding. Within such a restricted word count, every sentence must justify its place. Each image, character detail, and moment of unease must contribute to the story as a whole. There is little room for lengthy exposition or gradual detours. A world must be established almost immediately, its characters must feel human from the moment they appear, and the story must still suggest that something larger exists beyond its final line.

Each volume of The Black Pages is presented as a curated collection of dark fragments: five stories, five self-contained experiences, each designed to be read in a single sitting and remembered long afterwards.

Some are bleak. Some are brutal. Others are strange, quiet, or sorrowful. All are intended to leave a scar.

The series also offers author Daniel Prescott the opportunity to explore a range of genres through the same dark and atmospheric lens. Across its collections, The Black Pages ventures into Alien Horror, Dark Fantasy, Dystopian Cyberpunk, and Gothic Horror.

Each genre brings its own visual language, anxieties, and possibilities. Yet the heart of the series remains unchanged: short, immersive first person stories about ordinary people standing dangerously close to darkness.

Within these pages are cursed kingdoms glimpsed at the moment of collapse. Neon cities where bodies and memories are bought and sold. Broken faiths haunted by the things they once worshipped. Gothic houses burdened by memories of their own. Futures in which technology can preserve the body, but cannot save the soul.

The Black Pages is a home for dark ideas in their sharpest form.
